Females
The marsupial female reproductive system is entirely doubled. The females have a posterial urogenital sinus which has two lateral vaginas and a urethra. They give birth through a birth canal called the median vagina. When a female is pregnant it develops a kind of yolk sac in the womb because they lack a complex placenta to protect the embryo from the mother's immune system. The yolk sac allows the delivery of nutrients to the embryo. The pregnancy is typically very short lasting up to 4-5 weeks which means that the embryo is born at a very young stage of development. After birth, newborns crawl up to their mothers nipple, which is located on the underside of the mother either inside a pouch or out in the open environment, and attach themselves. The newborn remains here for a number of weeks until it is ready to be on its own.

Males
The reproductive system of a marsupial male is much more similar to mammals than that of a female. The only main differences are external rather than internal. They have bifurcated penis so that the penis has two ends corresponding to the females two lateral vaginas.
